In a short article titled Travel Focus on Crete, published by the flight comparison web site Cheapflights.co.uk, Makrigialos is named as one of the top 5 things to do in Crete. The resort is praised because it is "...perfectly designed by nature with shallow waters that are ideal for the little ones." Top spot is awarded to a "...stunning coastal drive along the north-east of Crete" in which the visitor can "escape the hustle and bustle of more touristy areas...", an area which is easily reached as a day trip from Makrigialos.

Diaskari beach, photographed on Clean Monday, 2nd March 2009Makrigialos is described as "...one of these special corners of the earth – a little-known gem of a place that is all the more charming because it is rather undiscovered..." in an article titled Witness the real Crete, published in the online travel guide simonseeks.com. It is a place of "...total relaxation..." where within minutes of arrival "...you’re released from the burden of life at home...", according to the author, who also took a shine to Diaskari beach, the Lassithi Plateau and, it seems, the local cake shop. Mirabello Bay, viewed from the road above the Ierapetra isthmusThe Kastro Mountain Tour is the latest addition to the growing list of South East Crete Holidays guides, offering a gallery of images that illustrate the tour, and a google map showing the route. The tour is a self-driven scenic drive, suitable only for 4x4 vehicles, that climbs on dirt tracks into the Thripti mountains. As well as some impressive mountain and valley scenery along the drive itself, the tour includes a short walking excursion to the Minoan ruins at Kastro, a site which was occupied between 1200-650 B.C. Located high on a promontary, Kastro offers stunning views of the Mirabello Gulf and the Ierapetra isthmus. The tour also takes in the Monumental Olive Tree of Kavousi, estimated to be some 3250 years old, which makes it a living witness of the Minoan civilisation.
