The Kastro Mountain Tour is the latest addition to the growing list of South East Crete Holidays guides, offering a gallery of images that illustrate the tour, and a google map showing the route. The tour is a self-driven scenic drive, suitable only for 4x4 vehicles, that climbs on dirt tracks into the Thripti mountains. As well as some impressive mountain and valley scenery along the drive itself, the tour includes a short walking excursion to the Minoan ruins at Kastro, a site which was occupied between 1200-650 B.C. Located high on a promontary, Kastro offers stunning views of the Mirabello Gulf and the Ierapetra isthmus. The tour also takes in the Monumental Olive Tree of Kavousi, estimated to be some 3250 years old, which makes it a living witness of the Minoan civilisation.
