Explore East Crete

Makrigialos is ideally placed on the south east of Crete to enjoy the benefits of both a relaxing beach holiday, and as a base for exploring east Crete. It has the best beaches in south-east Crete, including two blue flag beaches, and enjoys the superior North African influenced climate.

Road access is good, allowing day trips that range from Toplou Monastery in the far north east, the palatial ruins of Minoan Kato Zakros on the east coast, the Venetian fort and subsequent leper colony of Spinalonga to the north west, and the Lasithi plateau to the west. Even a day trip to Knossos is achievable.

Closer to base, the area is rich with stunning mountain scenery, uncrowded beaches and coves, historical sites, and traditional Cretan culture.

Exploring the Ierapetra isthmus, Crete's narrowest point - a day-trip from Makrigialos The Ierapetra isthmus, at 14km from north coast to south coast, is the narrowest part of Crete. It is a fertile, low lying area at the foot of the Thripti mountains. Most of the land is given over to olive groves, though in the south, around Ierapetra - Europe's most southerly town - greenhouses litter the landscape, giving the area a patchwork-quilt look when viewed from above.

Itanos beach and archaeological site, north east Crete, a day-trip from Makrigialos Cape Sidero is Crete's most north easterly point, and an area that is designated as a Special Protection Area and a Special Area of Conservation under the European Natura 2000 program. The area is home to a number of attractions, including the 15th century fortified monastery at Toplou, the coastal ruins at Itanos, Vai palm beach, and the rural village of Palekastro, which all combine to make this a particularly rewarding day-trip from Makrigialos.
